Overview
This case study examines how a battery materials manufacturer optimized the production of lithium battery paste by implementing advanced continuous mixing technology. The goal was to produce a homogeneous, high-viscosity paste with the correct stiffness, conductivity, and consistency while eliminating carbon black agglomerations and reducing downstream processing requirements
Challenges
- Achieving uniform dispersion of carbon black without agglomeration.
- Producing a paste with precise stiffness and conductivity.
- Handling high-viscosity, dough-like material efficiently.
- Maintaining consistent product quality for downstream equipment.
Solutions
The manufacturer implemented a Continuous Processor (CP) featuring a customized paddle and screw configuration. This design increased mixing intensity and shear control, while multiple fluid injection ports enabled precise timing of electrolyte addition. Variable shaft speeds and temperature control supported consistent paste formation in a continuous process.
Results
- Homogeneous battery pastes with no carbon black agglomerates.
- Significantly reduced processing time.
- High level of dispersion without alcohol or additives.
- Reduced need for additional drying or processing stages.
